If there is ONE show you MUST watch this year, it has to be “Don’t Call Him Mr. Mari Kita”. I had the privilege of watching a dress rehearsal last year before Covid wreaked havoc on this show and I did not expected to be moved to such tears. It was ugly, my mask was soaked, I was a goner. As were my sisters @janiceymkoh and @petrinakow I’m not sure why, but I think it had to do with @mrjulian.official’s authenticity, his deep appreciation of Zubir Said’s music, his love of the Malay culture, his heart-melting vocals, his rare perfect-pitch ability (he can come in on pitch BEFORE the band), his humility, his leadership to his students, ex-students and fellow band members, his respect to his mentor Iskandar Ismail, the music that runs through his veins... I could go on forever. I know he was my partner in crime in my “one woman” show Faghag...but this man, whom I have know since he was 11, is a rare, precious, Singapore treasure.
