Spent Sunday walking through Kabi Kabi Country with Spencer from @savesunriseglossies & @pachalight. Spencer & his family have spent the past few years defending a local habitat from being destroyed by development in Sunrise Beach Qld. Uniting Church (who are behaving more like a corporation than a charity) are building a nursing home & retirement village over five hectares of native bush land that is home to rare & vulnerable species such as the Glossy Black Cockatoo. Stage one has already been cleared to rubble. Unfortunately modern culture has grown a disregard for local habitats & puts development way before nature. But something we must remind ourselves is that WE are nature, WE come from the environment & destroying it not only effects the rare & magic species that live within, but effects the wellbeing of the communities around it. Green space & bush-lands are vital to our communities & more emphasis on preserving & protecting these spaces is needed. Spending time with Spencer has made me realise how hard this must be for him & the other kids in the community. I know if I was a kid & my local bush-lands were being destroyed I’d be doing everything in my power to stop it.
