10 things I’ve learned as a salon owner of over 8 years... For context: I owned a 16 chair employee based salon for 5 years and closed it in June of 2019... today I own a 30 chair booth rental salon @thenetworksalon that has been open 4.5 years. Here are some things I’ve learned, although I do feel I could fill a book with all of the lessons learned over the last almost decade in the salon business... 1. Your salon is a business, it’s not your whole entire being. It’s only a part of your life and has nothing to do with the beautiful soul you really are stripped of all materialism and possessions. It’s just a salon. 2. Without your salon, you are still valuable, amazing and worthy of success. 3. The artists that work with you will eventually move on and live their dreams. Being a positive part of their journey is the best goal and all good things will stem from that. 4. You do not own anyone or their clients, even if you feel like you do, the intention of building and growing someone is not pure if there are strings attached. There is no security in the salon industry. Clients have freedom of choice and your stylists are the ones your customers interact with more than you. They retain them just as much as you bring them in. 5. Loyalty can’t be bought - it can only be earned with trust over a long period of time. 6. A healthy culture values health, boundaries, communication and vulnerability. 7. The better I’m doing, the better my salon will do. 8. A toxic culture primarily comes down to the owner and what they do - it comes down even more to what they refuse to do. (Read that a few times) 9. Just because someone’s a top earner doesn’t mean they are toxic and rotting your culture from within. 10. Nothing in life is permanent.
