A few moments from the #bansoffourbodies march this weekend. Outlawing abortion has nothing to do with protecting life. If it did, our government would invest in those lives after birth. If those that claim the idealogy were actually "pro-life," they would be in support of universal healthcare, housing as a human right, racial equity, universal childcare, divesting from policing and the entire carceral state, climate action, funding their failing education systems, gun control, a living wage, etc. It's all connected. We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Yet, there are over half a million people in the US that are currently houseless, and an estimated 38 million (including 12 million children) are food insecure. Tens of millions don’t have access to the healthcare they desperately need and deserve. We are also home to the highest incarceration rate in the world. These failings are the direct result of the policy choices mentioned above. Real people are suffering and go uncared for, but the "pro-life" movement doesn't seem concerned about all the life right in front of them. The decision to ban abortion would disproportionately affect poor communities and communities of color. Cutting off access to safe and legal abortion is an issue with dire socioeconomic consequences. The wealthy and the powerful will always have access to it, regardless of their political views. This is by design. It's important to note that this is not about where you stand personally on abortion. For decades, the right has exploited and politicized the issue of abortion to galvanize their base and force votes. A woman's healthcare should never be used as a political bargaining chip. Abortion is a personal decision that our government and religious special interest groups do not have the right to decide for us. Abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is a human right.
