What's better than sunset on a summer evening? The sky filled with constantly changing colours and a gentle breeze cooling you after a long hot day.
Here, Milton Avery captures the pink hues of sunset on the ocean as a sailing boat floats through flamingo-coloured waves.
A fan of travelling, Avery would visit the coast and countryside of the US for extended periods of time. These annual periods would act as material for his paintings of nature and the coast throughout the subsequent year.
Avery’s summers were often spent sketching watercolours, followed by winters full of paintings based on these sketches.
