I took the train when I moved to New York City. I had planned to drive, but about two hours out of Chicago, somewhere on the Indiana tollway, my VW Rabbit GTI dropped its engine. I spent the night in a dinky motel carved into a cornfield but the next morning my big brother showed up and drove me, my one suitcase, and my Smith-Carona typewriter, back to Chicago where he put me on the Lake Shore Limited so I could get to town in time to start my internship. Half a day later, I walked into Grand Central Station, passed beneath the constellations etched onto that soaring, vaulted ceiling, and never looked back. I’m still amazed. ... I can’t believe how long ago that was, but this is my New York Anniversary — that day that those of us who were not born here—but instead were drawn here—always remember.
