Flowers’ is a film real close to my heart. An afro-futuristic fairytale of love, which follows a ceremony of a son being given away by his mother, to the world, to join his one true love. This whimsical story adopts references to classic Disney stories from the 1930s-50s, modernising tropes with realism for this coming of age tale. This film reclaims the magic of that time we all so familiar with: imagining what a black fairy-tale would look and feel like. The film has been many many (yes many) years in the making. I wrote this during bleaker pastures: a crippling time, when hope and love fleeted me, so I’m indebted and thankful to all the extraordinary souls who worked immensely to gift this life.
