Artists no longer merely dream of seeing their work in museums. The top ones are increasingly opening museums of their own.
In Chicago, Theaster Gates has converted a former bank and other nearby houses into a museum-turned-workshop for his and other artworks. In southern France, Anselm Kiefer recently opened a vast, subterranean exhibit space for his eerie installations. London has Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, and this week, London painter Glenn Brown joined the pack, opening his Brown Collection in a century-old warehouse in the city’s Marylebone neighborhood. “Art is an act of communication for me, not just self-expression,” Mr. Brown said. “My works are slightly repulsive, so I want to give people time with them.”
