The King and his siblings keep vigil over mother’s coffin
This evening’s guard of honour around the Queen’s coffin gave way for King Charles, the Princess Royal, the Earl of Wessex and the Duke of York to allow them to stand in silent reflection around their late mother.
The siblings arrived to cheers at the ancient Westminster Hall to stand vigil, known as the Vigil of the Princes, for about 15 minutes from 7.50pm.
Standing with heads bowed, they kept the Queen company — as her eight grandchildren will do tomorrow evening — ahead of the late monarch’s state funeral on Monday.
All four were in military uniform even though the Duke of York is no longer a working royal.
Prince Andrew, 62, was allowed to join his siblings in uniform as a “special mark of respect” for the Queen.
The BBC described the atmosphere as “calm” and “almost silent” as the royals arrived at the hall.
Other members of the royal family, including the Queen Consort, Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence and the Countess of Wessex, along with some of the Queen’s grandchildren, looked on.
