This "hidden cove", as defined by Guy de Maupassant in his manuscript La Vie Errante, in the mid-nineteenth century attracted English aristocrats and German nobles who, fascinated by the naturalistic and landscape beauties of the village, made their home here. . This phase, which in many respects represents the tourist take-off of the village, took place between 1880 and 1890 almost in conjunction with the construction of the road that connects the center to Santa Margherita Ligure: this work, in fact, favored the influx of a an even greater number of visitors, with positive repercussions on the accommodation and services sector, which, at the end of the nineteenth century, in fact began to expand with the construction of the first large hotels including the famous Hotel Splendido, as well as with the entry into operation of the first restaurants and bars.
