sommelier🍷❤️, or a wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing. It’s me. I’m that. . Passed my Level One Sommelier exam yesterday. 45 minutes. 70 questions. And only missed 10. No background in hospitality or wine (I really used to only drink moscato until @katkrazed taught me what a Reisling was senior year or college 😅). Special shoutout to my fellow Black female Baydestrian for the support. We did it! 😘 . Speaking of college, I was a first generation college graduate and there’s so much you do not know about navigating the process before and during. And the AFTER is what I never imagined. It didn’t register that “being in the first in my family to _____” wasn’t going to end there. So I’m first in my family’s history to step into the industry of wine. . Wine history is Black history. Our ancestors bodies were sold and traded amongst Europeans to create what we now know as Old World wine. So I do this for me. I do this for my family and it’s legacy. And I do this for the culture with a focus on Black women (major minority in the world of sommeliers gnats dominated by.. yes.. you guessed it... white men) ✊🏾❤️ .
