🛹🎶It all started with music. During an emotionally difficult period in her life, @lisavuong_ (Lisa Vuong) found comfort in her favorite songs. “Music was a place where I was able to understand and address my feelings,” she says. “Painting skateboard decks with lyrics was the next step in validating how I felt. It brought together pieces of myself and intertwined them.”
Lisa, who grew up in Adelaide, Australia, studied graphic design in college, along with photography and typography. Treating skateboards as canvases allows her to flex her many creative interests simultaneously: “Skateboard culture goes back to a time where fashion, music, sports and design merged,” she explains. The quotes and lyrics she paints on her decks are the nucleus of her work. “Making resonant words into mantras to hang on the wall just feels so right.”
With a full time role at a footwear brand, Lisa squeezes her studio work into weekends. “Every time I put a new deck out there, the response inspires me to keep going,” she says. Her skate decks, which she designs in Adobe Illustrator and creates with paint and resin, end up on collector’s walls — made to be seen, not used on halfpipes. Even so, Lisa takes artistic inspiration from the scuffs and breakage skateboards typically endure: “Not everything has to last forever,” she says. “As artists, it’s important to be able to let go. Things can be temporary, things can disintegrate. It’s all a part of the process.” 🎨#DesignInProgress
