A few days after #AfricaClimateWeek wrapped up in Gabon, the @wmo_omm has published a new report on the #StateOfTheClimate in Africa 2021.
The analysis shows how #ClimateChange is already undermining human health, food and water security and socio-economic development on the continent. Among other climate impacts, 2021 saw heavy floods in South Sudan, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, DRC and Burundi as well a historic drought in East Africa.
WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas said: „The worsening crisis and looming famine in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa shows how climate change can exacerbate water shocks, threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and destabilizing communities, countries and entire regions.“
However, the report also describes the rising momentum for #ClimateAction on the continent. Although Africa contributes to only around 3% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, more than 40 African countries have submitted more ambitious national climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions).
