Making a change in Hockey, Business and Philanthropy. Herbert Henry Carnegie was a Canadian ice hockey player with Jamaican roots. Although he would never play in the NHL, his influence on the sport is undeniable.
At 7 years of age, Carnegie started practicing ice skating on frozen ponds near his childhood home. As a 19 year old he started turning heads in the hockey world when he became a rising star in junior hockey with the Toronto Young Ragers. But unfortunately, his talents couldn’t stop the racism he endured.
Eventually Herb joined the Buffalo Ankerites and here he would play on a line with his brother Ossie and fellow African-Canadian Manny McIntyre as they became known as the Black Aces. With the Ankerites they ended up winning two league championships. During the Second World War, NHL teams were desperately looking for replacement players, yet Herb still did not get to play in the NHL.
After multiple championships and stat sheets that would make many players jealous, Herb Carnegie retired from his hockey career. A year after retirement, he founded Future Aces Hockey School - the first hockey school in Canada. As he was always excluded from hockey, Herb saw this school as something inclusive. In 1987, Carnegie along with his wife and daughter established the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation. To date their scholarship program awarded more than $860,000 to students engaged in volunteerism.
Next to inspiring and helping others, Herb Carnegie found success in other fields besides hockey. He joined Investors Group and he became the first Black Canadian financial advisor of the company. In the 32 years he worked for the company, he gained a lot of success and set many records. Yet he still continued his athletic career as a golfer, winning 5 championships in the process.
The only thing that matched his individual accomplishments was his philanthropy. During his lifetime Carnegie was inducted in 13 sports hall of fame, received the Order of Canada and had a school and an arena named in his honor. “I just want to leave this world a better place than I found it,” Herb often was heard saying.
