The Wild West Side. Starting in the 1960s, trucking became a more popular mode of transporting goods; when trains stopped running in the '80s, the High Line became a vestigial structure on Manhattan's West Side. Into the '90s, nature breathed new life into this abandoned railway with the emergence of a self-seeded landscape in the sky. In 2001, photographer Joel Sternfeld captured this return to the wild, and his photographs played a significant role in our founders' reimagination of this space.
