Ghost town in the High Arctic. ❄️ Pyramiden is a place that will stay with me forever. Not because it looks like the scene of a zombie apocalypse, but because it is a lesson that only a few factors need to change rapidly to lead to collapse. Due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, economic crisis, a plane crash, and several mining accidents, over just a few years, this Russian coal-mining town on the Norwegian island of Svalbard was abandoned. Now the Lenin statue stands lonely in the main square, dead potted plants litter windowsills, the Olympic-size swimming pool is dry, and children’s shoes are nearly placed next to their nursery beds. Now, with temperatures in Svalbard rising up to seven times faster than the rest of the planet, there are bigger changes afoot.
