“Fall in love with photography again.”
Brian Park, Self Portrait, 1998 for VOGUE, BEST of PhotoVOGUE.
We first met at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. It was immediately apparent that Brian had something to say in his work. He already developed the most refined lighting techniques similar to Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, but his candid self-portraits are what struck me the most. Brian spent years playing around with different lighting and documenting himself in these powerful moments of self-recognition. The images seem like they were merely tests as preparation for some other photographs to be taken at a later time. I don't believe this was the case. I've witnessed over the years these beautiful images of a man who was curious about his identity. The photographs were a range of emotions; confident, sometimes vulnerable, but constantly aware of his reflection and the light he shined. Within recent years, Brian was diagnosed with chronic tinnitus, which substantially impacted his ability to sleep and, ultimately, everything he was passionate about in life. He battled tinnitus for over two years. Within Brian's daily affirmations was the following note to himself "Fall in love with photography again." - Brian Park.
