A few days ago we celebrated my moms birthday. A great story about inclusion came up. For those who don’t know my mom was paralyzed from the waist down from an auto immune disease whe she was in college. My mom has always been active growing up whether if it was sports in high school or competitive fencing in college. After she became paralyzed she wanted to continue to stay active and use sports not only as way to rehab but to be included. This picture was taken at one of the first road races she had done at her local community. This was was one of the hardest things she has done because when she said she was going to race people made fun of her because she was going to race in her racing chair ( this was one of the first evolutions of the chair) which was very rare at during the time. Culturally people with disabilities were not seen being part of there own community like going to college, having a job, having a family, driving, etc. she’s taught me so many lessons but most importantly that change takes time, and surround yourself with people who believe in you! Thank you for being a great advocate and for teaching me how to navigate this world too 😘
