“The Queen, God Bless Her”
Since 1952, this was the brass lettering found on every grog tub in the British Navy until the end of the rum ration in 1970. If the rum were still being given out today, this lettering would soon be changed to ‘The King, God Bless Him’ to mark the start of the new reign for the first time in 70 years.
In this photograph, the Queen joined the crew on the HMS Eagle as victualling officer B.R. Hailstone issued the rum ration on on 29th April 1959 - eleven years before Black Tot Day 🥃. We like to think that the Queen would have joined in the tot that day given her hankering for a fine tipple.
It seems fitting that the end of such a historic Navy tradition saw its end with our longest serving monarch 🖤.
To The Queen, God Bless Her.
