Guest Directing forces you into an arranged marriage. You don’t select your team, but you’re suddenly in an intimate relationship with the crew, spending 12-14 hour days with one another for weeks. And just when you begin to fall in love, you wrap... a swift, but amicable, divorce. For the past 12 weeks - directing 2 eps of a new FX limited series - my partner has been Radium Cheung, my DP (director of photography aka cinematographer). It was a challenging shoot, but I’m grateful I had the opportunity to stretch creatively (I filmed on a blue screen!), and Radium confidently supported me while always giving me what I envisioned for the scene... sometimes his frames were even better than I imagined. We talked, laughed, ate great food, and made TV. I was already a fan of his work (see: Sean Baker’s Tangerine) and now even more so. He “Can Shoot” indeed. #Classof09
