Life update: tomorrow is the fourth Thursday in November and I’m thinking about my role as a mom, wife, daughter, friend, neighbor, and ally. I’m in charge of the apple pie and my not-so-famous pond cake. I’ve to stop by and see friends and family. But I also have to center the truth and be in solidarity with Indigenous nations on Turtle Island.
Today, we’ll crave out time to discuss the facts and fiction of the First Thanksgiving. To ensure my children understand the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures. My partner will help Cobe make a list of myths using Matthew Hughey’s “On Thanksgiving: Why Myths Matter.” For the third year in a row, Carter and I will read the suppressed speech of Wamsutta Frank James.
Reparenting reminder: While today and tomorrow we mourn the loss of life, language and culture, we use the other 363 days to celebrate the contemporary existence of Indigenous people. We never want our children to believe the myth that Indigenous people have gone extinct

As always,
Ignorance does not protect us. Ignorance does not make us innocent. Ignorance does not allow us to have good relations.

Rooting for the Land Back movement, Leonard Peltier’s freedom, the protection of Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirits, and the protection of The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).

P.S. This post is my family’s plan for how we’re handling tomorrow, it’s not meant to be an instructional guide.
