So last week, when I posted my Pride picture, I had a few man babies comment, “this Pride doesn’t exist”, “take your hands off these characters”, “know your history” and “these are a disaster like the She Ra remake”. Not only did it make me lol, it also made me go, well actually, there was a strong probability that Netossa and Spinnerella (these characters from She Ra above) were a couple. And also, you don’t in anyway have any ownership over these characters. Growing up as a young gay boy, I had no positive affirmations of same sex love or relationships anywhere in culture, so we had to grapple for things that seemed safe and accepting , that appealed to us and gave us comfort that we could fit into their world. This was the original idea to draw these couples, to imagine a world where LGBTQ+ love was not only represented but was a hopeful possibility. That is was ok to love who ever you loved.
