The most powerful things we can do • understand and create This is gallery artist, Adebunmi Gbadebo, digging up soil at the True Blue Plantation in South Carolina to use in her powerful clay vessels. @adebooms Recently, Adebunmi (2022 PEW Fellow) visited Lewis Miles Stoney Bluff Manufactory (Plantation), where Edgefield County potter, David Drake, once lived and created. She also visited True Blue Plantation, where her own relatives were once enslaved. Lastly, she visited Fort Hill (Clemson University), which was once the antebellum plantation of John C. Calhoun where enslaved people, convicted Black laborers, sharecroppers, and paid workers built the buildings. Over 600 bodies were found there in unmarked graves. Adebunmi is working to find ways to memorialize and honor the people whose unrecognized contributions built and helped sustain us. Her works of art are currently on view in HEAR ME NOW: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina now on exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, now through February 5, 2023. The exhibition will travel to Boston and be on display at the Museum of Fine Art from March 6 through July 9, 2023; University of Michigan’s Art Museum in Ann Arbor from Aug. 26 through Jan. 7, 2024; and Atlanta’s High Museum of Art from Feb. 16, 2024, through May 12, 2024. The exhibition will and finish up at the new Charleston International African American Museum in 2024.
