Our iconic coneflowers (Echinacea sp.) are more than their beautiful blooms in summer—their seed heads are a great source of food for the birds that stick around the city in fall and winter. When visiting, you may see native sparrows, goldfinches, and cardinals eating their seeds in the garden. This plant is also a vigorous self-seeder, which means leaving the seeds up in winter also provides next year’s flowers with an extra population boost. 📸: @timothyschenck
