Every once in a while we offer something that isn’t just exceptionally rare, of exquisite quality, from an important collection with famous taste and insight...every once in a while it’s the whole reason you got into the business in the first place, the kind of artwork you didn’t previously understand anyone could personally own, that you would have gladly traveled to any museum to see. For me Mondrian is one of a handful of artists who exemplifies the turn to abstraction in the 20th century- everything that is challenging and shocking and beautiful in non objective art. This is the art I was first fascinated and inspired by and loved. For prime period works by Mondrian, there is no better example than this work from 1930. These purist geometric works all play with compositional balance and this one surprises us by pairing or equating an emphatic and enormous square of bright red with a narrow but subtly active field of white, blue and yellow.
