This is Sinbad, the Coast Guard’s most famous cutter mascot and the only Chief Petty Officer Dog (K9C) in the service’s history. Sinbad was adopted by the CAMPBELL (WPG 32) crew in 1937. During World War II Sinbad was made famous in the media for his service at sea, a well as his misadventures on land! His port call antics were notorious- resulting in him going to Captain’s Mast twice for demotion, and being formally banned from the country of Greenland for an incident involving a local farmer’s flock of sheep! In the tradition of any good sailor, Sinbad overcame his port call-related setbacks and continued to serve on CAMPBELL for a total of 11 years of sea time. In 1948 Sinbad received well deserved retirement orders to Station Barnegat Light in New Jersey, living out the remainder of his life with the crew of the station, often spending his day looking out to sea. A good luck charm of the cutter, Sinbad’s memory lives on with a statue on the mess deck of the current CAMPBELL. #USCG #CutterMascot #cgatsea #cutterlife
