WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS A LOT OF EARNESTNESS. I’ve now spent more years of my life running than not running. Somewhere along the way it went from a *have* to do—a form of punishment, or a way to stay “in shape”—to a *get* to do, and an act of goddam JOY. Which is probably why I’m making a dumb, happy face in most every photo from this weekend’s Chicago Marathon. 😛 Also because @nike pulled together an incredibly dope group of people to run it together, all of whom I was so grateful to meet and support. ❤️ (thanks, @erbyrnes !)
Neither the race nor the training was always fun. But I tried to remember that it’s a privilege to be able to move, and think of runs, especially the hard ones, as a way of expressing gratitude for that. It also taught me the value of treating everything in your life as a practice. I think of this quote from Bikkhu Bodi: “The only requisites for reaching the final goal are two: to start and continue.” You’re forever crossing new starting lines and finish lines. And if you keep showing up, and lining up, it’s amazing where you’ll find your body can take you.
A special shoutout to @rebekastowe whose coaching calls were a weekly highlight—but also @jeslynnyc (with megaphone cheering skills beyond compare) and @ochosystem who has shared endless running wisdom in our @gq work.
