TBT: This year is the 20th anniversary of the first IMATS London. It was such an amazing historic event on so many levels. The Gallery Hall of the Business Design Centre was only big enough for 50 stands but those who attended that weekend will never forget it. I brought the great Dick Smith with me. For many, it was the first time meeting the Godfather. Another legend, Stuart Freeborn brought several incredible pieces for the museum from 2001 Space Odyssey and Star Wars. Stuart was a wonderful storyteller. The best part of Freeborn's keynote was having Dick help Stuart remember some of the finer points. Ve Neill and a young, Justin Raleigh were Joe Blasco's stand. Editorial artist, Sharon Dowsett gave a superb keynote address. All the stands had excellent demos. Artists came from all over Europe and the UK to experience the IMATS magic. Friends were made and careers were launched. Dick only came over twice. That was the only time Stuart spoke. Keep in mind this was just a few months after 911. Some felt I should have postponed it a year. Two people on my staff refused to go...but I wasn't going to let the terrorists paralyze us with fear. I'm sure there are many who wish they could have been there. I'm grateful for the opportunity to bring everyone together and for the artists and companies who stood with us to make it happen.
