Today @suunto is hosting their first community Commuting Day—the idea is to encourage people to commute by either cycling or running as an alternative to a fossil fuel vehicle. By tracking your commute with a Suunto watch, a @hammerheadrides bike computer, or just the free Suunto app itself, you can tag your activity as a commute and see the amount of carbon emissions saved versus driving in a car. Cutting my personal CO2 emissions is probably only my third or fourth motivation for my personal human-powered commuting, but I think it’s cool that the app provides a way to view the power of collective action. While reducing my personal transportation CO2 footprint is an obvious boon, I primarily find commuting by bike or foot to be a huge benefit to my overall quality-of-life. It’s a convenient way to get exercise, I find it far less stressful than fighting traffic and idling at stoplights (I’m fortunate that in Boulder there are many efficient paths and underpasses for non-motorized traffic), and parking is never an issue. Going by bike often encourages me to take the scenic way home, too. Click the link in my profile for more info.
