Possibly because I am a Mediterranean I have never seriously considered (beyond my privilege of being a white, male European) what Europe means to me until @fazquarterly asked me. It is quite difficult to feel proud of belonging to Europe when every day we are complicit in the atrocities we commit at the southern border. This week 27 people have been beaten to death while trying to cross the Spanish border. It was not the first time and unfortunately it will not be the last. I am very happy to see how Europe can welcome, in an agile and humanitarian way, white people fleeing from conflicts but I am outraged by the migration policies in the global south border as well as their positioning in other international conflicts. Europe has to lead in global social justice or it would be hard for us to believe that a better world is possible.
