"Tango Negro" by the talented and iconic Mexican-American guitarist and singer, 💟Lydia Mendoza💟 also known as the “La Alondra De La Frontera” (The Meadowlark of the Borderlands) and “La Cancionera De Los Pobres” (The Songstress of the Poor).
Born on May 31, 1916 in Houston, TX, Lydia was one of eight children born to musical parents who fled from Mexico during the start of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. She began performing with her family at a very young age to help make ends meet. The Mendoza family hitchhiked all around south Texas performing for tips anywhere they could including labor farms, barbershops, restaurants, street corners, and fiestas. It was during this time that Lydia learned how to sing and play six-string guitar, 12-string guitar, mandolin, and violin.
All throughout her youth, Lydia continued to perform with her family and eventually emerged as a solo artist after being signed by Bluebird Records in 1934. With over 1200 recordings, tours that stretched all over the United States, Canada, and Latin America, inductions into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame, Texas Women's Hall of Fame, and many additional rewards and recognition... it’s no wonder Lydia Mendoza was later named "The Mother of Tejano Music"🌹✨
