Before NYC’s Central Park existed, there was a predominantly Black community living there called Seneca Village. But NYC’s elite wanted to create a park rival to those of Europe, and in 1853, the city used eminent domain to take the land from the Black landowners. Around 300 residents were displaced from Seneca Village. Its Black residents dispersed, and the community disappeared.
Did you know that?
Our new animation series alongside @intersectionalenvironmentalist shares lesser-known public lands stories found in our new Public Lands Curriculum update. The Public Lands Curriculum aims to tell a more authentic and complete story of public lands. When sharing public lands' history, we must be intersectional, holistic, complete, and accurate. We must know the past to change the future.
For more stories on public lands, check out the Public Lands Curriculum at wilderness.org/plc or by using the link in our bio.
We also want to thank IE’s Executive Director @diandramarizet for providing narration and @lilypadula for all things animation!
