After 5 days of backpacking we got to spend some quality time resting and relaxing at @estancia.cerroguido which was about 20 miles outside of Torres Del Paine park. Horseback riding through the Patagonian countryside with the Las Torres off in the distance was the highlight for me.
We were also fortunate enough to spend some time with @piavergarafotografia learning about the Puma conservation efforts in the region. The once abundant Pumas had for many previous decades been getting killed off by local cowboys and ranchers because they were constantly killing cattle and sheep. Thanks to some of the local conservation efforts there has been a big push over the past 15 years or so to implement ways to allow the Pumas to coexist with the ranching so that they aren’t eradicated from the area. Since then, their populations have been rebounding steadily, which is important because every time a Puma makes a kill, there are dozens of animals from the condors to the foxes to the insects within the ecosystem that depend on that food as well. Luckily we spotted one about 100 yards out on our mini safari on the last morning.
Thank you to @marktowill and @tkimberv for helping point us in the right direction to experience the magic of Cerro Guido 🪄
