It was already shameful enough that dozens of democracy activists, including Joshua Wong, were facing trial on charges of violating Hong Kong’s appalling national security law. But now they will face a non-jury trial where a hand-picked judge, undoubtedly doing Beijing’s bidding, will decide their fate. Jury trials have been used for 177 years under Hong Kong’s common law legal system. Now they are one more casualty of the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on freedom and democracy. We urge democratic governments worldwide to decry the trampling of the rule of law in Hong Kong and to stand with the brave activists on trial.
