Last Tuesday at 6:45 pm my grandma, Nelba McClenon, finished her earthly journey. I’m so lucky to say that she was one of my best friends. We had the best talks and even held space for some of the tough ones, we danced and laughed together, we told each other some secrets, she was my shopping buddy and on some of our longest days together we’d sit quietly together at night in the dark. She was like a mother to me and saw my heart clearly at my lowest. She’s the kind of person that would go hard for you even through moments of disagreement. Always putting her heart before her ego. A humbleness I try to walk through in the many parts of my life. We are going to miss her so much but I am happy that she’s free, removed from the pain in her earthly shell and reunited with her eight siblings and grandpa Ernest. The second to last born of her South Carolina, Edgefield County tribe and the last to join another world so close to us all, unseen but felt. My Gemini Mamma ❤️ So glad I made it home to say goodbye for now.
One of our last conversations I was telling her about my art sustainability class and how I encourage my students to reuse found objects and already purchased materials and she said you need to have me come talk to them and I told her how I tell them all about her and I could hear her smile over the phone and she said I’m so proud of you.
