IN BETWEEN // Lost at Seas by photographer Mandy Barker Mandy Barker works with scientists and ocean missions around the world. Her images contain a strong contradiction: they are aesthetically appealing but they speak of an ecological disaster. These images do not want to shock, but they wish to show beauty by creating awareness in the viewer. "I grew up in Hull on the east coast of England” she says, “As a child I learned to love nature and live outdoors. When I even saw a partially submerged car and a refrigerator, I realized that I had to communicate to people what was happening in our oceans.” A team of the Institute of Marine Sciences developed a project with the aim of transforming waste into a resource for a greater economic, environmental and social benefit. The portable prototype of the machinery developed in the project transforms the plastic material into certified marine fuel, at a low cost.
