Though these trails are very popular during the Larch Madness (the season when the larches, a deciduous conifer tree, turn yellow), it seemed like a good way to spend the day. So, I put my Mamiya 6 MF and a bunch of film into my backpack and headed off for 20 miles and 7,000 ft of climbing." "For this photo, I had just turned around, beginning my return to the car. I was walking along a teal lake and rounded the bend to find this scene. The yellows of the larches were just so brilliantly back-lit in a way that made them glow and stand off from the rich shadow and color of the water. I actually had to take the photo on two separate rolls because, on the first try, I forgot to hold my hand to place a shadow over the lens. It made a pretty minor change but was worth it." "It's always worth sleeping in your car, waking up before sunrise, and climbing a mile and a half into the sky for good photos." - Joe
