#215 - I am finding it hard to find words to express my emotions. I have had many Canadians express to me over the last couple of years how they personally feel it is not correct to refer to residential school system as a genocide. To quote the Canadian Prime Minister who led the establishment of the residential schools Sir John A. MacDonald: “ I want to get rid of the Indian problem.....Our objective is to continue until there is not an Indian that has not been absorbed into the body politic, and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department...”1920 This deeply angers me and I cannot believe people continue to live in ignorance and perpetuate this type of racism directly to my face in 2021. Do better, work to reconcile with your local community, be a part in feeling our pain, and remember - the last residential school closed in 1996.
