Incredible news and an historic moment for our high seas! A comprehensive framework for creating protected areas within the high seas, a massive swath of ocean outside of any nation’s jurisdiction, has finally been agreed upon by world leaders. After decades of grueling negotiations, the @unitednations reached a consensus late Saturday night on March 4, 2023, setting in motion plans to establish and effectively manage our global ocean commons for the first time in history. The high seas cover nearly two-thirds of the ocean and provide critical habitat and migration routes for a massive variety of species, including sea turtles, sharks, rays, and whales. Protecting this vast and ecologically important part of our planet is an imperative step in protecting 30% of all land and waters by 2030.
