Y is for YOU The penultimate day of our A-Z for The Horror Show! Today is the first one we’ve struggled with. What begins with Y? Bear with us while we kick this into shape. We want to articulate how important all of YOU are in this equation. There’s no point to any of this without you. We felt this in a very real way in the first lockdown. Days away from The Horror Show! being announced, it was cancelled. At the same time, we’d been working on two installations for ‘Stranger Than Kindness’, the @nickcaveofficial exhibition about to open @sortediamant in Copenhagen. One was an ambitious recreation of the office from ‘20,000 Days on Earth’ and the other was a new video installation featuring every past and present Bad Seed. We were there with Nick and @thewarrenellis working on the final details. We finished by unpacking thousands of Nick’s books onto the shelves of this uncanny office, then returned to London, intending to be back in a week for the exhibition opening. But that didn’t happen either. For months, these magnificent, carefully constructed rooms sat empty. We thought about them often, psychically projecting ourselves into their deep dormancy. We felt a palpable absence, a kind of loneliness, because these installations really only existed to be experienced. We learnt that creative projects are a two way street. We need exhibitions, films and culture to immerse ourselves in. But all these things also need an audience. They NEED YOU. Maybe what we’re trying to say is that The Horror Show! isn’t all tied up - it’s not authoritative or comprehensive. It is a sincere multi-dimensional, audio-visual articulation of an idea. A thesis, of sorts. But it needs to be witnessed, received and interpreted, by you. Come and see what YOU think. Our friend and mentor the late Joshua Compston coined a phrase as a strap line, while building his burgeoning (and never to be fully realised) art empire, Factual Nonsense, FN — No Fun without U. He wasn’t wrong. The Horror Show! needs YOU.
