Three more sleeps until the @lamarathon and my @su2c fundraiser to help cancer research! Tap the heart above to donate!
March is colon cancer awareness month - in 2007 my mom passed of colon cancer at age 44. At the time, colorectal cancer was largely known as a disease of the elderly. However, in the last twenty years there’s been an alarming rise in colon cancer cases amongst young people. If the current trends continue, cases of colorectal cancer in people under 50 are expected to nearly double by 2030.
However, if detected early, this cancer is highly treatable! Nearly 90% of patients with stage I and early stage II colon cancers are cured with surgery alone.
Due to the recent trend of increasing cases of colon cancer in younger people, the screening guidelines have been lowered from age 50 to age 45. Lets be honest, colonoscopies aren’t fun, but they’re important! Know the symptoms, get screened, and encourage your friends and family to follow suit!
Dr. Jordan Karlitz, chief of gastroenterology at Denver Health Medical Center says, “If you're 45 years old, get screened on time -- do not wait. If you are under 45, report concerning symptoms to your provider and report your family history to your provider -- it can be lifesaving and impactful to prevent the development of colorectal cancer or at least advanced disease”.
