Today, I shout the name of Dr. Vicky Conway—my dear friend, the friend of so many. Her pursuit of truth and her commitment to human rights in Ireland changed the land and changed lives, and her generosity knew no bounds. Dr Conway was an Associate Professor of Law at Dublin City University and a former member of the Policing Authority and the Commission on the Future of Policing. She was also host of the Policed in Ireland podcast which was highly critical of garda behavior and procedures and shared in an accessible way the history of state surveillance in the country. She was an significant member of the Lawyers for Choice group which advocated for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment banning abortion. In the midst of this rigorous political, academic, and feminist work, she was also vocal about her own struggle with bipolar disorder. Her legacy will be long and lasting, her contribution to Irish law immeasurable, and her imprint on me will never dissolve. If anything, I am reminded through Vicky’s life and work that you must advocate in your own world, in your own way, for people you can’t see and don’t even know. And you must do it because it must be done. They say you should give people their roses while they are alive. As a mutual friend of Vicky’s made clear yesterday: ‘Vicky was so good at that.’ IMAGE: Jennifer Packer, ‘Hold,’ 2017, oil on canvas. #vickyconway #restinpower
