My mom was born in Jamaica, in the parish of Hanover. She was born at home, during a time when strong community, togetherness, and core family values were woven into the fabric of everyday life. Her early years were formed in a rural area called Success, on the land my great grandparents owned, planted their roots, raised family, and where they are buried til this day. Much of who I am today is because of the sacrifices made by my mom. For years I watched her overcome many trials & tribulations that would have destroyed most. That resilience is in the Jamaican blood. Hanover was among the hardest hit during Hurricane Melissa and its rural location has made it difficult to access aid. Yesterday, we spent the entire evening shopping for items to send to Jamaica in hopes that we can do our part to support Jamaica during this difficult time. Jamaica may be a popular tourist destination for some, but for many of us Jamaica is a second home, a place where core memories live, and a place where our roots are firmly planted. I have faith that the people of Jamaica will rise up and overcome this tragedy, but they’ll need your help today, tomorrow, and in the coming months & years. Remember, together we’re resilient. 🇯🇲
