Such a casual, offhanded comment but it felt like a dagger 💔
Many of my friends and colleagues had kids before me and as I listened to them discuss nighttime awakenings, toddler tantrums, stress over developmental milestones, sibling rivalry, and more I tried to connect and listen and support but sometimes people would say
‘You won’t understand, you don’t have kids.’
I believe this comment wasn’t said out of spite or negativity. It was probably someone trying to change the conversation after realizing that I didn’t have my own kids (yet).
But little did they know that that was the one thing that I wanted more than anything in the world at that time and it was a really difficult reminder.
