This clip is very politely titled “the importance of positive representation”. I would personally title it “the importance of fighting Tory vindictiveness against queer children” but both work! As I told @anniemacmanus in our interview for her ‘Changes’ podcast, I vividly remember going to see her DJ as a student in 2008 so it was trippy (and a huge pleasure) to be interviewed by her about my life! She’s also one of my style icons 😭 The two of us spoke about my work but also my personal life and the big changes in it. Change is integral to growth but also painful. I talked about the rough stuff: my troubled, distant father who was incapable of practising love and who disappeared when I was still young because of addiction; the shame involved in being a visibly queer kid in the 2000s during section 28; discovering myself in the profane cathedral of the gay club; experiencing transphobic violence; my own battles with alcoholism and drug addiction; and, most recently, trying to break a cycle of dysfunctional relationships with men. It’s easier listening than it sounds lol, I promise. I’m very grateful for the life I have today but if I’m gonna talk about how I got here I like to be honest!
