“Into the Morning Light” — 48x48” acrylic on raw canvas
The image here is based off a short film @___sisterwolf___ directed about my practice during the pandemic, where my morning swims were a solace of routine in a time of uncertainty. (She is brilliant and you should check out her work).
But I’m increasingly interested in depicting figures displaying confidence and steadfastness in a world that is undoubtedly chaotic. I think we need that right now. In images; in objects that fill our spaces. In art. The woods in the background feel ominous, uncertain. Maybe they’re the future. And the branches in the foreground are acidic curtains that frame that uncertainty, hide it in pleasantry. But most importantly, the figure — yes, a self portrait — swims casually in the water, breaking its glassy veneer. I painted this water in layer upon layer of transparent color, so the reflection of the trees above sinks down and a sort of foggy emerald darkness sits atop. I want the water to feel deep, cool. I want the figure to be disturbing that depth, making the first waves of the new day. I want to let out into the unknown, beat against its stillness, cause a splash. I want that jolt of cold and then the warmth of the sun rising over the water. I want a new day.
