Hollywood - 1983. Photo 1: looking NW across Hollywood & Vine. The Howard Johnson’s had been on the far corner since the early 70s — it closed a few years after this photo and was replaced by a short-lived new Hollywood location of the Brown Derby (the original Hollywood location half a block down had closed a couple years prior). The building, known as the Laemmle Building and designed by Neutra, burned down in 2008 when it was the nightclub Basque. In the background is the Guaranty Building (1923) designed by John C. Austin who also helped design LA City Hall, the Shrine, and the Griffith Observatory. It’s currently owned by the Church of Scientology. Pic 2: this was the Frederick’s of Hollywood flagship. Opened in 1947 in the old Kress dept. store building by the inventor of the push-up bra, it existed in this spot until it moved down the street in the mid-2000s. Pic 3: @mussoandfrankgrill since 1919 and thankfully still with us today! Pic 4: then-President Reagan’s star being cleaned on the Walk of Fame. Photo 5: the Hollywood Brown Derby in its original location on Vine the block south of Hollywood. This location is supposedly where the Cobb salad was first made — same with the Shirley Temple. This branch was the second to open after the Wilshire Blvd. original and closed a couple years after this photo — in 1985. In 1987 a new Hollywood location would open in the old Howard Johnson’s (mentioned in pic 1 description). Photo 6: Molly’s on Vine in between Selma and the Montalban. First opened in 1929 — it made it all the way until 2011. Like everything at the Vine/Selma intersection — it was replaced by a boxy nondescript building. Pic 7: looking up at the Hollywood Wax Museum sign towards the tower of the First National Bank building. This building, on the NE corner of Hollywood & Highland, has been empty for YEARS and I always dream of what it could be. Pic 8: the Chinese Theatre during the Mann’s years (like when I was born).
