Anencephaly... You never know which side you will fall on until you are faced with a diagnosis like this. In order to provide appropriate patient care, all options must be presented and AVAILABLE. Now they are not, and crossing state lines is not an opportunity for everyone either. Someone asked, “by continuing the pregnancy, is the patient at risk for things that can go wrong during any pregnancy, like gestational diabetes, high BP, etc?” The answer is yes, they are still subject to any pregnancy complication. I was also asked why this patient did not have an earlier ultrasound. Contrary to popular belief, many people do NOT get multiple ultrasounds in pregnancy, even in early pregnancy. My patients are indigent and don’t have that luxury.
