The first article I had published as a contributing writer for PantherNOW. Though not the first article I had written for organization, for many of the ones I had drafted up until this point were not approved for publication, this article was a stepping stone for my skill in journalism. Where my other articles covering events had failed, this story was a testament to the trial-by-fire experience of having work that was not efficient, timely, or in good-enough condition to be broadcasted.
A special component of this event was its importance on education, specifically through literature. Unlike events I had experienced up until this point (mostly composed of student activities, more interactive settings, and aesthetically composed places), this event was wired to educate and to inform. Many of the people in attendance were accomplished professors, scholars, or academics with a fervor to learn more about ‘exile’ culture and its relation to African American studies.
My angle for this event was to first research what the exile studies series had been composed of, what they strive to educate, and the overall intended audience. In the field, I was prioritizing to speak with professors and educators who had a vested interest and participation in the exile series.
One great reward from this event, other than it being my first publication, was the ability to connect and create a direct relationship with many of those who attended, but specifically with Dr. Shawn Christian.
