A creature feature, crime noir, and socio-scientific critique rolled into one, THE MOUNTAIN IN THE SEA by Ray Nayler proves that the New Weird genre is alive and thriving.
🐙⚓️
From its obsession with symbols and language, to its metatextual touches, to its brisk pace in contrast with its poised tone, so much of #TheMountainInTheSea fits snuggly next to the works of Jeff VanderMeer and China Miéville or even Cixin Liu and Adrian Tchaikovsky. It is a stunning tale of hyper-sentient cephalopods and bumbling scientists—a multitudinous examination of consciousness, both human and inhuman.
. .
Nayler’s characters are ambitious, curious, and complex. His world is politically fraught, technologically expansive, and surprisingly grounded. But more than all of that? This book is simply, purely, really, really fun to read! I had such a great time diving deep (pun intended) into it, letting its speculative thrills wash over me (2nd pun intended). Kind of obsessed.
